Traffic in Salisbury is a very contentious issue. As part of a citizens science project we have started to install Telraam traffic sensors to monitor volumes of traffic, pedestrian and cyclists. The data is available online in real time and historical data can be analysed for free and more information is available at Telraam.com
These sensors enable the “democratisation of anonymised data” as the sensors collect anonymised data on pedestrians, cyclists, cars and lorries. Such data enables the public, policymakers and local authorities to use this real-time and historical online publicly available data to inform traffic policies. A street can be selected and sensors be mounted in residents’ first floor windows.
A number of Salisbury residents have recently purchased traffic sensors for Citizens Science Project and are urging more residents and interested parties to join them. Data from the sensors can be accessed with anyone with a smart phone or computer at Telraam.
Traffic is probably the number one problem for residents in Salisbury and by placing one of these sensors in your window you can monitor the different modes of transport along your street (pedestrians, cyclists, cars, van and lorries) and record if vehicles are exceeding the speed limit”.
Active Travel Salisbury are keen for more people to have access to data which reveals how fast vehicles travel on their streets. This is about safety, reducing casualties and improving access to safer walking for residents, the elderly and for those with disabilities.
Sensors cost approximately 160 Euros will enable you monitor traffic in our small Salisbury streets.
The Telraam sensor has a low resolution camera for privacy reasons and an AI chip for detecting and categorising street users but importantly for users the speed of vehicles is also indicated. The sensor has a mobile data connection built in which relays aggregated and anonymous data that any member of the public can access
