Who created the site:

The site has been developed  by a number of residents who have been involved in transport in Salisbury for over 30 years. Through the years  they have built up a network of organisations, partner groups, relationships with both the city council and Wiltshire council, and a breadth of experience on planning and transport. By combining local experience and different skill sets the authors and their partners have a unique view in understanding the root causes of traffic congestion in the city and the potential for realistic solutions.

Why was the site created:

Currently the city suffers from chronic traffic congestion gridlocking the city on a daily basis with up to 11,000 vehicles per day using our inner city streets e.g. Fisherton St. Active travel makes a major contribution by giving residents a choice of how they travel to the city. However, there is no single solution to the provision of active travel in the city nor is any single group capable of addressing the problems and providing solutions. It is clear that the current situation narrow historical streets and a lack of safe walking and cycling infrastructure is not appropriate. The current congestion of vehicles in the city is not sustainable from a health and economical perspective and is not conducive to improving active health.  This site was created i) to provide information and assistance to residents and those that visit the city on the active travel choices and routes into and across the city and ii) to encourage decision makers on Wiltshire Council and in Salisbury City Council to provide financial support for active travel modes.

Aims:

  • To provide information for residents on active travel.
  • Improve road safety and provide healthier choices for active travel.
  • To reduce the barriers to active travel.
  • To enable Wiltshire Council and Salisbury city decision makers to understand the historical issues and traffic associated problems in the city.
  • To discuss economically viable active travel strategies that can be implemented in the city.
  • To increasing footfall in the city centre through the provision of active travel modes to improve the benefit of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs.
