National Highways has announced plans to demolish both Wyndham Road footbridge and Victoria Road bridge – only the Victoria Rd bridge will be rebuilt. This will have major impact on the ease of access from Wyndham Road across the busy A36 dual carriageway will destroy a vital walking link to and from Salisbury City centre.
The Wyndham Road footbridge offers a safe direct route to and from Salisbury to Wyndham Park Infant School, St Marks Junior School, Exeter House School, Leehurst Swan School and two nursery schools.
Recent surveys by residents has demonstrated that the Wyndham Road footbridge is heavily used throughout the day by residents either accessing Salisbury City or for access from the City Centre to landmarks including Castle Hill Country Park, Hudsons Field and Old Sarum.
National Highways proposed alternative, via St. Marks underpass, adds 1.2 km to the route, forcing pedestrians along narrow unprotected pavements alongside the noisy dual carriageway. Many residents consider St Marks the underpass to be dark and unpleasant where there will be increased conflict as it is the main cycle route into town for many cyclists.
National Highways have not consulted residents on this project and they need to take the view of residents into consideration before the community is severed by the A36 dual carriageway in 2026 when the footbridge is demolished.
