Better Connected is a vision for domestic transport in England for transport for people, for safety, reliability, affordability and accessibility
This strategy has many fine words where it puts people at the heart of everything we do, so transport serves them, no matter who they are and intends to use transport to create better connected places across the country, so communities can thrive and grow.
However, what caught our attention were the quotes from Chris Boardman about the implementation of side road zebra crossings which will be transformative for people walking, wheeling and cycling. He stated that “It may sound like a small change, but for children, older people and those with impaired sight, simpler zebra crossings can be transformative. They will give families the confidence to let children be more independent and make everyday journeys safer. What’s more, they can be put across the mouth of side roads, exactly where people naturally want to cross on trips to school, the shops and beyond.”
Hopefully, once the legislation is in place, Wiltshire council will be able to work with Active Travel England to deliver these crossings in Wiltshire and particularly in Salisbury to prioritise pedestrians in our narrow historical streets. We will be working with Wiltshire Council and Salisbury City Council to review the implementation of side road zebra crossing to give priority to pedestrians in Salisbury.
